A busy week has meant this post has been delayed longer than I would have liked. However all good things come to those who wait, apparently, so hopefully I’ll be able to adequately articulate what a wonderful property this is on NW Cornell and hit ‘publish’ before it gets snapped up!

It’s a rare day when the gardens vie with the house for the honors but it’s unavoidable in this case. The property’s four acres, designed by prominent landscape architect Michael Schultz, are nothing short of extraordinary. Backed up against Forest Park to the north, it seems like every turn takes you to another hidden part of garden. Paths lead you to a meditation garden, a greenhouse deck, a lounging patio with expansive tree-top views and one that takes you through the trees to the bottom of the driveway where a large two-sided greenhouse acts as a gatekeeper’s lodge. It really is breath-taking and frankly just a rare experience in Portland.

The house is equally unique. It was designed by Laura Migliori and has a contemporary lodge feel to it. Two living areas are defined by what some might say is a quite daunting staircase. Over the double-garage, sits the master bedroom suite, a guest half bath and the laundry room. On the other side a large open-plan living-dining-kitchen area complete with high vaulted ceilings, floor-to-ceiling rock fireplace and a huge south-facing deck. Downstairs from this room is the over-sized second bedroom, full bath, sitting area and large walk-in closet. While I’m sure the layout of this room worked for the owner’s needs in the design stage, I can’t help but feel that the space could be utilized better. It’s enough space to be re-designed into two reasonable-sized bedrooms and a full bath.

At a little over 2200 sqft, it’s compact living by contrast to the enormous beautiful lot that it sits on. However I think with some thought and maybe a little addition this could become a magical family house, and very much on the right side of quirky.¬† Priced at $775,000.
